Antiques & Chihuly at The New York Botanical Gardens

CHIHULY, describes himself “more choreographer than dancer, more supervisor than participant, more director than actor.” After several personal tragedies and physical accidents, CHIHULY had to step away from the glass as he could no longer hold or blow it. He became a macro art designer, seeing the whole design from far away. Juxtaposingly, many of his designs seem to be of extremely colorful and playful microbes. His inflictions created a gift where he could live in both worlds at once.

Walking along the path one comes upon the well known dome of The New York Botanical Gardens and a massive, yellow and red installation rightly called  The “Sol de Citron”. CHIHULY can be appreciated from now till Sunday, October 29th through the changing of the seasons and the light. CHIHULY night’s are certainly spectacular with jazz.

Just past “Sol de Citron”. Guests meander through several installations created for the the Antique Garden Furniture Fair: Antiques for the Garden and the Garden Room Preview Party and Collectors’ Plant Sale under a beautiful white tent. There were friendly canopies of green garden like settings and interesting statues each exuding the past. Many pieces were salvaged from large European estates that have fallen into disrepair. The original setting in it’s grandeur must have been impressive. It’s bittersweet. This year internationally renowned event designer Bronson van Wyck was the Designer Chairman. He created a design based on Édouard Manet’s painting Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe (Luncheon on the Grass).

Attended by over 600 guests each year, this event is what is called “The Best in America” by antique experts and is attended by dealers from around the world. Celebrities like Martha Stewart, Sigourney Weaver and Barbara Corcoran were also in attendance. Here the nation’s art dealers, buyers and guests mingled as they sipped cocktails and savored country pate with large chunks of cheese from large country boards. The food, decor and antiques had an old world, country French feel. Many of the guests easily socialized as we live in a world which is a bouquet of sub-cultures. Everyone seemed to know everyone. There were plenty of hugs and kisses hello and of course some nice sales. Even art dealers purchased from art dealers. It was a beautiful thing.
