In 1640, a small group of eight men, one woman and one boy, settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts landed at Conscience Point, North Sea in Southampton. They then obtained land from the Indigenous Shinnecock Nation. Three years later, the village was 43 families strong.
Since 1898, the Southampton Colonial Society, now known as the Southampton Historical Society has been preserving the Thomas Halsey Homestead, the first home built in Southampton, The Rogers Mansion, Pelletreau Shop and numerous significant artifacts collected by the society. The Rogers Mansion also includes a one-room schoolhouse, an 1825 barn, and a 19th-century paint store.
The museum is very accessible as it is just off the south end of Main Street. The current exhibit is: Hunting the whale: the rise and fall of the Southampton industry. The Halsey Homestead is also walking distance and there are several events throughout the season where you can experience the estate and homestead in full grandeur.
