The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center presented The 11th Annual Get Wild! Summer Benefit on Sunday, August 13th at the private residence of Leslie Alexander and Liz Brown in Southampton. The foundation is supported by events like this, donations and the help of volunteers. The rescue center provides courses for those who want to serve their community and local wildlife. The courses are based on your comfort level working with animals. They send out a mass text when an animal is in need of help transportation or evaluation.
The donated residence via Alexander and Brown provided dynamic views of the ocean, dunes and the architecture of the residence itself. It was a crisp and clear sunny afternoon to celebrate another year of rehabilitating and successfully releasing animals back into the wild across Long Island. Guests enjoyed beautifully presented light vegetarian fare, cocktails, live music and visiting animals from the center including Archimedes the owl. Dr. Justin & Amy Molnar and the whole staff at Shinnecock Animal Hospital were honored.
The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of The Hamptons is a grassroots organization comprised of 3,000 members and supporters and is the only non-profit committed to the rehabilitation of wild animals. Though there are licensed rehabilitators, biologists, and animal behaviorists, there are just over 300 people who have trained as part time wildlife rescue assistants, more are needed. The Center is located on Munn’s Pond Park, on a several thousand acre greenbelt of public land from Tiana Bay to Peconic Bay just west of Southampton Village. It provides an ecosystem comprised of coniferous pine barrens, deciduous forest, meadowland and fresh and salt water wetlands. The center which was specifically designed for wildlife receives over 10,000 calls a year (mostly due to our encroachment on their ecosystem) and works with a low budget of 650,000 a year.
“There are several reasons that animals are brought to the center, those include flying into window structures, domestic pet attacks, lead poisoning, lawn mowers, cars, wild animal attacks and viral/bacterial infections. The biggest need right now is for rescuers and transporters (via volunteers).
