U.S.Open, Preliminary overview at Shinnecock Hills, Southampton

The Town of Southampton is proud to host the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills from June 11 through June 17 and expect 30,000 guests on top of the additional summer visitors. Preparations for such an event take place years in advance and some representatives of the U.S.G.A. moved to Southampton two years ago. Recently, a larger group of construction workers moved Out East about 5 months ago. It has been an immense setup with construction ongoing on the course.

The Town has been working closely with Suffolk County, the State of New York and the USGA to plan for the event. There will be several road changes and a few road closures to accommodate buses that will be shuttling the thousands of spectators expected. “The advantage of having hosted the event before helps the Town tremendously,” said Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman. “We have a greater sense of what works and what’s needed to keep traffic flowing.” The US Open was last played at Shinnecock in 2004. Like before, the Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach will be used for parking and a staging area for buses. Spectators will go through a security checkpoint and then board buses to the event. Unlike the 2004 event, there will also be a parking area east of the US Open site at the Bridgehampton Hampton Classic grounds to shuttle spectators to the course. In addition, the Hampton Jitney will be taking spectators from Montauk to the US Open.
